Why Tension and Trauma Release Exercise?
It can help with

Trauma
We experience trauma when we find ourselves confronted with a situation that is too much, too soon and too fast for our nervous systems to process. This 'unprocessed data' alters the level of tension in our bodies, and this tense knot of old experience becomes the 'new normal' for our experience of life. TRE® can help our bodies process this old data, allowing us to return to the natural, optimal, state of relaxed readiness. A place where new data can be digested and processed effectively.
Stress
Chronic stress can create many health complications for the modern human organism. TRE® can help reduce the held stress in the body and, in doing so, broaden our window of tolerance for everyday stressors.
What is TRE®, and how can it help?
Tension and Trauma Release Exercise® is a somatic protocol developed by Dr David Bercelli (1999), that allows us to reconnect with and re-claim the body's natural mechanism for discharging stress and tension - the body tremor. Through this shake, bounce, quiver or twitch, the nervous system invites repetitive contraction and release, which over time helps to dissipate held tension, old trauma responses, and the stress from everyday life. The process teaches us to bring compassion to the unique, visceral experience of ourselves and to follow the body's innate natural impulse towards healing and equilibrium.
General Wellbeing
We cannot separate the mind and body when working with the nervous system. The brain, spinal chord and all the off branching neural tissue is intimately involved in the process. In working with this 'bottom up' (as opposed to a 'top down' technique like Narrative Therapy) modality, we may process emotional patterns of anxiety, depression, rage, fear, deep grief and/or shut down. In the process we work with the emotions that might surface and learn to regulate their intensity and hold space for them within us. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, we can begin to build patterns of resilience and generally experience our humanness more comfortably.

Body Pain
TRE® can help with stubborn or chronic body pain. The process allows for natural pulsations to travel through the fascia (the tiny thin web of nerve tissue that runs throughout the muscles, organs, skin and bones), breaking up stuck tension or build up and sending release messages to tight muscles. Over time the tremor mechanism encourages neuroplasticity (our ability to change our thought and body patterns). When we practice TRE® regularly the old muscle response can disappear and be replaced by a new sense of openness and ease.
Fatigue & Insomnia
Often the held tension in the nervous system is not in the foreground of our awareness. Living with these underlying sensations we often exhaust ourselves trying to function 'normally'. Restoring the system back to regulation often relieves fatigue or patterns of insomnia.
